AIPO Strengthens Intellectual Property Knowledge Through Patent Searching and Drafting Workshop

The Protection and Education Group of the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) recently conducted another successful round of the Patent Searching and Drafting Workshop. Twenty-five (25) participants from various institutions attended the workshop, which was held via Zoom on October 1, 4, 8, and 11, 2024. The program provided comprehensive training in theoretical insights and practical skills, focusing on the essential aspects of patent searching and drafting.

The first day of the workshop began with a foundational session on Intellectual Property (IP), focusing on the essential principles of patents. This was presented by Ms Madielaine Fatallo, Research Officer from AIPO-PEG. Participants were introduced to the basics of IP, with an emphasis on understanding the critical role patents play in safeguarding inventions. A key highlight of the session was the importance of thoroughly knowing their invention, as this knowledge is vital for successfully navigating the patenting process and securing protection for their innovations.

The speaker, Dr Proceso Fernandez Jr, AIPO Director, provided valuable guidance on techniques for spotting patentable inventions and conducting thorough analyses of the prior art, ensuring participants could assess the uniqueness of their inventions.

On Day 3, the discussion focused on the intricate process of drafting patent claims, which is a crucial step in defining the scope of protection an invention will receive. Participants engaged in practical, hands-on exercises, drafting claims for sample inventions while benefiting from valuable feedback provided by the speakers. This session equipped participants with the skills needed to craft effective patent claims to safeguard their innovations.
