In today’s rapidly evolving world, intellectual property (IP) is growing in importance as it plays a crucial role in driving innovation and safeguarding ideas that are the building blocks of start-ups. Last Friday, February 17, 2025, the Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO) hosted an Intellectual Property Awareness session for BS Management of Applied Chemistry Ateneo students in Arete’s Sandbox Zone. For students working on innovative projects, this session explored their long-term potential beyond just earning a good grade.

The session opened with an introduction to the concept of intellectual property (IP) and its various types, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and related rights. The discussion then explored how each form of IP is designed to protect different types of intellectual creations, outlining their specific requirements for obtaining protection, as well as their scope and limitations.
A key focus of the workshop was on the practical aspects of IP management. Emphasizing the importance of IP due diligence and the process of conducting IP searches, drafting patent applications, registering trademarks, and understanding copyright formalities. All different strategies to protect IP rights from infringement and safeguard their innovative products especially in their research and development stage.

A lively Q&A session followed, during which students were encouraged to ask insightful questions and actively engage in discussions of hypothetical scenarios, all while keeping their current products in mind. This exercise was designed to deepen their understanding of intellectual property (IP) requirements, not only in the context of their future businesses within the Philippines but also with a view toward globalizing their products. At the same time, the session encouraged them to retain their student perspective, allowing them to consider how these concepts would apply both now and as they move into their professional careers. This workshop served as an important stepping stone for these aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs, providing them with the tools to safeguard their creations, effectively leverage their IP assets, and ultimately contribute to a thriving and sustainable innovation ecosystem.
